Appomattox Campaign (March 29-April 9, 1865)1

  1. Note that there are two different “official” divisions between the Siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign.  The Official Records officially designate the Appomattox Campaign to include the final actions around Petersburg in late March and early April 1865.  The Siege of Petersburg Online, however, considers these final actions to be Grant’s Ninth Offensive against Petersburg, with the Appomattox Campaign beginning with the evacuation of Richmond and Petersburg on April 3, 1865.  The Official Records nomenclature is used here for ease of use and clarity.
