Union Casualties in the Appomattox Campaign: March 28-April 9, 1865

Editor’s Note: Bryce Suderow was kind enough to pass along a type-written version of his article on Union casualties in the Appomattox Campaign. Brett Schulte transcribed the typewritten version into the electronic version below. Any mistakes you see here are due solely to my transcription and formatting skills, or lack thereof. Note that in this case Bryce uses the U.S. National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program classification system, which ends the Siege of Petersburg with the March 25 Battle of Fort Stedman and counts the last few days around Petersburg and Richmond as part of the Appomattox Campaign. As a result these casualty returns include those last few days of fighting as well as the race to Appomattox.

This is a great list for Mr. Suderow to share. It should be noted that this is a partial list of cavalry casualties in the Appomattox Campaign. Many units do not show up in the reports and tallies such as the 15th NY Cav. that lost 12 men at Appomattox and the 10th NY Cav. suffered 8 casualties on April 9. Capehart’s brigade at Appomattox Station had three West Virginia regiments (the 1st, 2nd and 3rd) in it that have no reports but suffered casualties including the commander of the 1st West Virginia Cavalry, Major Howe. The 1st Maryland Cavalry lost men on April 9th too. Record keeping was very poor in April 1865 and no complete list of casualties during the Appomattox Campaign has ever been made. I am working on a list for the casualties at Appomattox, so if you know of any, please let me know. The list is growing all the time which I verify through Service and Pension records. List like the one given by Mr. Suderow and continuing research will give us a better idea of the total casualties at Appomattox and in the Appomattox Campaign in the future. Hello Pat, Very interesting, I do not have him among the known casualties at Appomattox, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t one of them. Can you provide me with the unit he was in so I can further research him? Thanks!
