I am trying to find a casualty list for the Confederate Army in particular, a Soldier with the last name of Lockhart who apparently either died, or was wounded in the battle. I do not have a first name, rank or company, but he was from South Carolina. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I don’t envy your position. You’ve got a lot of digging to do! You have a last name and the State of South Carolina, but you were very vague on the battle (you posted this on my Contact page for the entire Siege of Petersburg, there were dozens of battles and skirmishes during the course of the Siege). You also don’t know the unit. Here is my suggestion. Go join Fold3.com (this isn’t cheap, so I want to make you aware of that up front). Look in their Civil War Confederate Compiled Service Records for each of the units I’m about to paste below. Look for Lockharts. Any one of them or more than one of them could be your ancestor. Just go through the list of units which fought at the Siege of PEtersburg from South Carolina below and check them off of your list if you find no Lockharts. Once you are completely through the list of units, you should be able to look through each Lockhart’s CSR to find who was wounded or died at the Siege of Petersburg. Good luck!

My great uncle, John Martin Gilbert b. 1835, 14th Alabama Regiment fought in this battle and was wounded 4 times. He survived but suffered throughout the remainder of his life from the wounds. I have a copy of his pension application dated 1915 outlining his participation and capture by the Union Army.
