13th Maine Infantry

Note: A detachment of only three companies of the 13th Maine under Major Abernathy B. Grover participated briefly in the Siege of Petersburg from about July 18 through July 27, 1864.  The other seven companies were pursuing Jubal Early’s Valley Army to Snicker’s Gap and were never present at Petersburg.

Muster In: Organized at Augusta and mustered in December 13, 1861.1
Muster Out: Veterans and Recruits consolidated to a Battalion and transferred to 30th Maine Infantry December 25, 1864.2

  • Note: A detachment of three companies of the 13th Maine under Major Abernathy B. Grover reached Washington, D.C. July 16, but were ordered to Bermuda Hundred, leaving Washington, D.C. on July 17 and arriving at Bermuda Hundred on July 18, 1864. They were ordered to move back to Washington, D.C. on July 26 and presumably left Bermuda Hundred on July 27.9,10

  • Duty in the Trenches at Bermuda Hundred July 18-26, 1864.21
  • Ordered to Washington, D.C. July 26, and probably left Bermuda Hundred on July 27.22
  • Veterans on furlough August-September, Non-Veterans duty at Harper’s Ferry, W. Va., until October 5.
