  • Note: The 8th Georgia Cavalry was formed as a result of Special Orders #161, written on July 11, 1864.  The unit was made up of the 62nd Georgia Cavalry and part of the 20th Georgia Cavalry Battalion, but it looks like only the 62nd Georgia Cavalry was part of this unit in July.  More research is needed.11,12

    3. The Confederate Order of Battle, Volume 1: The Army of Northern Virginia by F. Ray Sibley, Jr., p. 113: Sibley does not have the 62nd Georgia Cavalry in Dearing’s Brigade in June 1864.  According to Sifakis the unit wasn’t disbanded until October 1864 from orders issued on July 11, 1864, creating the 8th Georgia, which Sibley DOES have listed in June 1864.  Someone is wrong here.  More research is needed.

July 14, 1864, p. 2 col. 4-5: This article seems to solve the issue.  The writer refers to “Colonel Griffin’s Regiment repeatedly, and calls the same unit the 62nd Georgia Cavalry.  So the 62nd Georgia Cavalry existed here, NOT the 8th Georgia Cavalry.
