Today in the Petersburg Campaign: October 1, 1864

October 1, 1864

Brig. Gen. John Dunovant, CSA, is mortally wounded during the fighting on the Vaughn Road, south of the James River, VA, following the Federal capture of Fort Harrison, VA.

Bvt. Maj. Gen. Godfrey Weitzel, USA, is in temporary command of the 18th US Army Corps, the Richmond, VA, campaign.
