Today in the Petersburg Campaign: May 11, 1864

May 11, 1864

Maj. Gen. James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart, CSA, is mortally wounded at the combat of Yellow Tavern, VA, while defending Richmond, VA, from Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan’s, USA, cavalry raid, receiving a pistol wound in his stomach and dying painfully the next day in his nation’s capital, Richmond, VA.
