PETERSBURG CAPTURED!

We have stirring news from the seat of war. Petersburg was captured on Wednesday by the Eighteenth (Gen. BALDY SMITH’S) Army Corps. As we write, there are no particulars; but the indications are that the capture was preceded by a severe fight.

The importance of this achievement it is difficult to exaggerate. Petersburg is one of the chief railway centres of the Confederacy. By its possession, we command all the rail roads between Richmond and the South, with the exception of the Danville road. The Rebel Capital is thus virtually isolated.1
