150 Years Ago Today at Petersburg: December 31, 1864

December 31, 1864

The Confederate sharpshooter battalions of Scales’ and McGowan’s Brigades attack the Union Sixth Corps skirmish line to procure clothes and other supplies for the winter.

President Abraham Lincoln contemplates removing Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, USA from command for the botched assault on Fort Fisher, Wilmington, NC.

Major General Gouverneur Warren, commander of Fifth Corps, Army of the Potomac, is granted a 15 day leave of absence.
