Commemoration Dawn Tour Of The Petersburg Breakthrough At Pamplin Historical Park

On Saturday April 3, 2010, Pamplin Historical Park and The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier will
host the 6th Annual Breakthrough Battlefield Anniversary Tour. This detailed two-hour walk covers the story of the decisive engagement that ended the Petersburg Campaign on April 2, 1865 and led to the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. There is something special about being on hallowed ground on (or near) the anniversary of an important event and experiencing the battlefield story at the same early dawn the soldiers endured 145 years ago. This year’s tour will be led by A. Wilson Greene, the Park’s Executive Director and author of The Final Battles of the Petersburg Campaign, which provides the most detailed description of the Petersburg Breakthrough ever written.

Please be aware that the tour, like the battle, begins at early dawn and follows the Park’s trail system. Participants may wish to bring a flashlight for the first portion of the tour.

Tour participants will be rewarded with a hot breakfast buffet at the conclusion of the tour. This year the special guest is John Fox, author of The Confederate Alamo: Bloodbath at Petersburg’s Fort Gregg, April 2, 1865.

John will give a brief talk about his book followed by a walking tour of Fort Gregg after breakfast. The Breakthrough Anniversary event will mark the national release of John’s excellent new book, which will be available from the Civil War Store and autographed by the author. Mr. Greene will be available to autograph copies of his book as well.

The tour takes place on April 3, 2010 at 5:30 a.m. The tour and breakfast are free to Park Members and $10 per person for all others. The fee also includes admission to the Park. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Pamplin Historical Park at 804-861-2408 or by e-mail at memberservices@pamplinpark.org.
