Gloucester County Historical Society, 1983, pp. 79-81: I want to thank Art Snellbaker for providing me with the contents of the pages mentioned in this footnote.  Art writes the following: “As to commanders, there is a report in Haines  ”Men of Company F” Pp 79-81 by Lt. Colonel H.F. Chew, then a Major, about the action at Reams Station August 25, 1864. Chew reports that on that day the 12th was commanded by Lt. Col. Thompson. That he, Chew, was detailed to take the right of the regiment comprising companies F, A, I, B & H and deploy them as skirmishers. They were so engaged for about 3 hours and at about 3 O’Clock General Smyth, the Brigade Commander, ordered them to return to the line as soon as possible. Upon their return an artillery round burst nearby and wounded Lt. Col. Thompson and some of the men. Thompson was carried to the rear and Chew assumed command of the regiment. ”
