Today in the Petersburg Campaign: June 7, 1864

June 7, 1864

The Trevilian Raid (by Maj. Gen. Philip Henry Sheridan, USA) as Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA, sends Sheridan’s Cavalry to join up with Maj. Gen. David Hunter’s Cavalry at Charlottesville, VA, so as to create a diversion while Maj. Gen. George G. Meade, USA, under Grant, moves the Army of the Potomac south across the James River to attack Richmond from the south by way of Petersburg, VA. Sheridan moved west between the North Anna and the Mattaponi Rivers against the Confederate rail line with combats at the following:

a) Trevilian Station (11th and 12th)
b) Newark or Mallory’s Crossroads (11th and 12th)
c) King and Queen Court-House (18th and 20th)
d) White House or Saint Peter’s Church (21st)
e) Black Creek or Tunstall’s Station (21st)
f) Jones’ Bridge (23rd)
g) Saint Mary’s Church (24th)
