Today in the Petersburg Campaign: June 13, 1864

June 13, 1864

The Richmond (Virginia) Campaign, begins with Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, beginning to move his troops to front Grant’s Union move on Petersburg, VA.

6/13-7/31/1864.

Skirmish at Riddell’s Shop, VA, the Richmond (VA) Campaign.

Skirmish at White Oak Swamp, VA, the Richmond (VA) Campaign.

Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell, CSA, is assigned to the command of the Dept. of Richmond, VA, while Maj. Gen. Robert Ransom, Jr., CSA, is ordered to the Dept. of Western Virginia.

Union forces reach Wilcox’s Landing in the afternoon and prepare for Grant’s famous crossing of the James River.

The 142nd Ohio reports for duty with the Army of the James and is assigned to Terry’s First Division, Tenth Corps, Army of the James.

The 3rd New York Light Artillery, Battery E, is attached to the Siege Corps, Army of the James, at least temporarily.

Brigadier General Alfred H. Terry again assumes command of First Division, Tenth Corps, Army of the James.

The 1st Maryland Cavalry (dismounted) and 148th Ohio are temporarily assembled into an ad hoc Brigade reporting to Brigadier General August V. Kautz, commander of the Cavalry Division, Army of the James.
