Volume XLII of the Official Records covers the Petersburg Campaign from August 1 to December 31, 1864, from Grant’s attempts to get astride and hold the Weldon Railroad in August to the assaults on Fort Harrison in September and the Battle of the Boydton Plank Road in October. This period is generally the least studied and least written about of the entire Petersburg Campaign. It is my sincere hope that we will see more monographs on aspects of this time period in the near future. This volume is broken up into three parts. Part 1, listed below, contains reports of the leaders of various units from armies down to regiments and batteries on both sides. Volumes 2 and 3 consist of correspondence such as letters and telegrams, organized by date and time sent.
