THE WAR NEWS.

In the matter of news yesterday [September 12, 1864] was the blankest day of the war.  Nothing from Petersburg; nothing from Georgia.  The sole item that reached us came by telegraph from Charleston, and that amounted to nothing.  The enemy in front of that much-bombarded city was exhibiting rather unusual activity, shelling Sumter and making reconnoissances.

In all the length of military line extending from Deep Bottom, on the north bank of the James river, to the Weldon railroad, south of Petersburg, but one man that we know of is really busy—Beast Butler.  This enterprising individual is working at his canal at Dutch Gap like a beaver.  When it shall be complete we may look for lively times; until that consummation monotonous inactivity will prevail along the Richmond and Petersburg intrenchments.1
