FROM THE 109TH N.Y.V.

—-

In field near Petersburg, June 19

SOLOMON ALDRICH, Sir: – A painful duty devolves on me, one that pricks me as a pointed arrow. Co. E has to mourn the loss of seven of its bravest and most respected members, among whom is your son C.B. Aldrich. He was wounded on the 17th inst. while charging the enemy’s works near Petersburg, and died since in the hospital. He was universally loved and respected in the Company, was cool and brave in action, and had already won distinction. The officers and men of his Company, with you, deeply mourn his loss, and trust that in heaven we shall again see him and fully know his noble character.

H.V. Bogart is dangerously wounded. There is some hopes of his recovery, but he will need the best of care. He is wounded in the abdomen. Please acquaint his mother with the facts.

Ed. Brigham was in the fight, come out all right. Lieut. M. Watson commanded the Company, and acted as he ever has under fire, with coolness and bravery. He is all right except being somewhat wore out with the marches.

Maj. P. H. Stillson commanded the regiment. He does not know what fear is. He is all right.

Very truly yours,

Q.H. MILLHUM

First Segt., Co. E
