NP: June 17, 1864 Washington Evening Union: The Situation

THE SITUATION.

We stated in our issue of yesterday, that Gen. Grant was in possession of Petersburg. We got the information from a reliable source, and only anticipated the official from the War Department. There is no doubt the possession of this point by Gen. Grant will interfere greatly with the Confederate commissary. Petersburg is twenty-two miles from Richmond by railroad, and it is expected that these twenty-two miles will be the scene of some very desperate fighting.1
