FROM GENERAL BUTLER’S DEPARTMENT

FORTRESS MONROE, June 9 [1864].—We have no regular communication between this place and the White House.  The mail steamers are running regularly between Washington and the White House, consequently, we can obtain but little news from General Grant’s army.

4 o’clock, P.M.—The steamer John A. Warner, Capt. [probably Jonathan] Cone1, arrived from Bermuda Hundred, and reports all quiet with Gen. Butler’s forces, except a little firing in the direction of Petersburg this morning.

No intelligence from Gen. Grant’s army, and no firing heard in that direction for three days.2

Sources/Notes:

  1. SOPO Editor’s Note: I found an image of what I believe is the mentioned John A. Warner as it looked post war in a book called Bristol published by Arcadia Publishing. A Captain Jonathan Cone built the John A. Warner, and was almost certainly the same Captain Warner mentioned in this article.
