The monitor Sangamon passes Fort Monroe, bound for the James River to protect City Point.
General Longstreet indicates to General Lee that Sheridan’s cavalry is in all likelihood headed in the direction of Richmond, and that Pickett’s infantry division and Confederate cavalry should be enough force to discourage Sheridan from attacking the city.
