150 Years Ago Today at Petersburg: February 9, 1865

February 9, 1865

Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, who assumed the command of all the Confederate Armies, proposes granting a pardon to all deserters who return to their commands within 30 days; President Jefferson Davis concurs.

Brevet Major General David McM. Gregg is officially relieved as commander of the Second Cavalry Division, Army of the Potomac, at his own request.

Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant temporarily leaves the Siege of Petersburg, bound for Washington, D. C.

Union Fort Tracy is officially named.
