150 Years Ago Today at Petersburg: February 4, 1865

February 4, 1865

Ulysses S. Grant and George G. Meade plan for and issue orders for what would become the Eighth Offensive against Petersburg and Richmond, resulting in the Battle of Hatcher’s Run from February 5-7, 1865.

Artillery skirmish between Union Fort McGilvery and Battery 5 and Confederate guns which could bear on Fort McGilvery.

Capt. W. E. Potter is temporarily assigned as acting assistant inspector general of 24th Corps, Army of the James in place of Bvt. Major A. H. Embler.

Robert E. Lee questions what duties are required of him after nomination as General-in-chief of the Armies of the Confederate States.

Lieutenant Colonel James Howard is relieved from duty on the Confederate Inner Line and continues in command of the 18th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery and 20th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery.

Lieutenant Colonel John W. Atkinson is relieved from duty on the Confederate Inner Line and continues in command of the 10th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery and 19th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery.
