150 Years Ago Today at Petersburg: February 3, 1865

February 3, 1865

President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward meet with Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens, John A. Campbell, and R.M.T. Hunter to discuss peace proposals.  Lincoln reiterates there will be no peace until the southern states recognize the Federal government as the only national government, which the southern states are a part of.

Confederate First Corps commander General Longstreet asks Richard Ewell to have his Department of Richmond man the artillery on the Intermediate Line north of Nine Mile Road.  Longstreet’s troops occupy positions south of this point.

Major Wade H. Gibbes is placed in charge of the artillery defending Chaffin’s Bluff, replacing Colonel Robert A. Hardaway, who resumes command of his artillery battalion.
