January 24, 1865

Bvt. Maj. Gen. Orlando B. Wilcox, USA, is placed in temporary command of the 9th US Army Corps, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.

Action at Fort Brady on the James River, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.

Commander William A. Parker is relieved of his naval command in the James River at the request of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant for his failure to properly heed Grant’s warning about an imminent attack by the Confederate James River Squadron at Trent’s Reach.

General James Longstreet takes Field’s Division on a short reconnaissance down the Darbytown road, southeast of Richmond.
