Title: My Dearest Friend: The Civil War Correspondence of Cornelia McGimsey and Lewis Warlick

Author: Lawning, M. & Lawning C. (editors)

SOPO’s Take: I only read the portion pertaining to the Siege of Petersburg, but the book seems fairly well done.  There were some minor mistakes by the editors when commenting on the Siege of Petersburg.  Lewis Warlick was at the Siege of Petersburg almost uninterrupted, receiving a furlough in February 1865 and returning in March in time for the final battles.  He seems to have been wounded at or near Farmville during the Appomattox Campaign, and although he did return home after the war, he died soon thereafter in the summer of 1865, almost certainly due to his April wounding. Warlick’s letters allowed me to piece together some information about the commanders of the regiment and MacRae’s Brigade, some battles in which the 11th NC participated, and in one case the strength of MacRae’s Brigade on October 29, 1864.
