BTC’s Take: This book covers companies B, C, and D of the 38th Virginia Artillery (Read’s) Battalion, as well as the short lived Thomas Artillery, which folded into the Hampden Artillery in October 1862. Moore looks at each unit individually until they became members of the 38th Artillery Battalion mid-way through the war, at which point he looks at the battalion as a whole. This approach has its pluses because there simply isn’t a ton of information on what each battery did at the Siege of Petersburg, making that section less sparse than if each of these batteries was covered in its own book. in this series. Moore provides a reasonable amount of information on each unit during the Siege, and there are some surprisingly good and varied maps on battery locations throughout the Petersburg Campaign time frame. Images of Battalion commander Robert M. Stribling and Lynchburg Artillery commander Joseph Blount are present in the back of the book.
